THE worst cold snap to hit Britain for years has exposed the fact that many drivers are just not properly prepared for a head to head confrontation with Jack Frost. Possibly one of the worst things that can happen is a breakdown or crash which forces the driver and passenger to leave their vehicle. Ask yourself just how long you could stand there in a business suit or a dress and light coat in minus 15 degrees . Keeping warm is vital when you leave your vehicle in such cold. Many driver's carry a flask of coffee but I don't know that many who carry a blanket. There is a high-tech solution to this with the type of blanket used by some emergency services and the military. Called the Mediwrap thermal blanket this item, which costs around £10.00 is so compact it can be easily stored in the smallest of car boots and could be a life-saver. The RAC has teamed up with the British makers of the military forces endorsed Mediwrap and it is available to the UK public for the first time. Mediwrap's reflective design is designed to stave off the effects of even the harshest of weather by maintaining core body temperature, keeping drivers warm, safe and visible at all times. Used by the UK's emergency services, it is particularly lightweight and is considered part of a standard First Response kit by many medics and the Army. It is easy to say it won't happen to me but you only have to be caught out once in extreme cold and if there are children in the car the problem is compounded. However, it is much easier and better to be prepared. |
