Busy year for BMW

BUSINESS and family drivers are set to benefit from dramatic reductions in motoring costs from BMW this year.

The comapny will roll out new engines for 3-Series saloon and Touring models in March, along with the latest versions of its mid-size coupe and convertible models featuring new body styling and upgraded equipment.

But the 3-Series likely to attract most attention will be the 320d. With the benefit of latest Efficient Dynamics packaging, the diesel car will offer high economy of 68.1mpg and low tailpipe emissions of 109g/km - a remarkable best-of-both-worlds performance.

Also in March and just in time for summer comes a fresh version of the classy Z4 roadster, the new sDrive35is, which has an extra 34bhp under its bonnet to take output to 340bhp.

With seven-speed double clutch transmission as standard, maximum use can be made of the higher performance and gearshift response times have been accelerated for a more sporting gear change. The result is rest to 62mph in 4.8 seconds with top speed limited to 155mph.

The German firm's other big-hitter for spring is the all-new 5-Series and the world's most successful executive model is promising the highest level of standard equipment ever, including stop-start and braking regeneration technology along with low-rolling resistance tyres.

Economy is improved across the range of four petrol and three diesel-powered cars, but latest Efficient Dynamics technology is again promising a sensational combination of performance and economy in the 520d - expected to account for most 5-Series sales in Britain.

The car's four cylinder, two-litre motor has the latest direct injection and turbine geometry to produce 184bhp, enough to take it to the benchmark 62mph rate in 8.1 seconds and on to 141mph all out despite boasting best-in-class economy of more than 56mpg.

Standard specification features major upgrades on the previous model and includes Dakota leather upholstery, BMW Professional radio and Bluetooth telephone preparation, with eight-speed automatic transmission available as an option.
