From scrappage to swappage

A DRAMATIC money-off deal looks set to trigger a fresh round of Car Wars in the showrooms.

Britain's newest car is to be made available at discounts of up to £3,885 in a surprise package aimed at boosting sales for Vauxhall.

Called Swappage, the deal promises reductions of at least £3,000 on the Astra to buyers trading in cars over seven years old - irrespective of their value or condition. Similar discounting is also available on most new Corsa models.

'The Government's scrappage scheme may have almost run its course, but we're offering customers an even more generous package on three of our most popular ranges.

'We are determined that customers will not be left short-changed when the official showroom incentive comes to an end,' said sales director Rory Harvey.

Unlike some of its rivals, Vauxhall is imposing no upper age limit on trade-in models under the Swappage plan, which runs to the end of March. Old cars to be swapped need to have been owned for only 90 daysand dealers will also allow husbands and wives to trade in partners' cars, as long as they live at the same address.

'That means that any seven-year-old UK -registered car with insurance, road tax and MOT can be used as currency to reduce the cost of the 2010 Corsa 1.0 Energy three-door to just £8,925 and the recently-launched Astra five-door to as little as £12,995 for the Exclusiv 1.4 model.

'Even bigger savings can be made on Astra Sport Hatch Sport 1.4. With Swappage, the cost of this model comes down by £3,885 to just £12,995,' said Mr Harvey.
